Monterey city is one of the cities in California. It is found on the central coast of the state. The city is bordered by San Francisco which is about 100 miles to the north and Los Angeles which is approximately 300 miles away to the south. The city lies at the strategic Big Sur terminus which makes it a good stopping point for tourists plying along Route One.  It is predominantly a residential area, but has many tourist attraction sites that include some beautiful scenery, gorgeous beaches and a conducive mild climate.

The city is served by the Monterey County Airport that link it with other cities in the USA. However, many visitors prefer to use the San Francisco International Airport which is much larger. A railway system also serves the city via the Amtrak Coast Starlight train for passengers, linking it with Washington and Los Angels.  Alternatively, visitors can also use the Highway One to get to the city. Some people like it due to its scenic beauty.

The greater Monterey Peninsula also offers great attraction sights. The Cannery Row, which was once a fish processing district, has now been revitalized for tourist attraction purposes. It has bistros, boutiques, shops and restaurants. The famous Monterey Aquarium is found here. Tourists who come to this facility can be treated to activities that include glass-bottom boat tours, whale watching and deep sea fishing. Other sites in the Peninsula include bays and beaches along the coast, beautiful golf courses like the Pebble Beach Golf Resort that is famous worldwide, and many more.

The Big Sur stretches approximately 100 miles all the way from Monterey to San Luis Obispo. This stretch is a natural beauty except for the small Big Sur village and small communities that seem to infringe on it. Visitors touring this region get to see the Santa Lucia Mountain Range that borders the Pacific Ocean. Together with the sea waters, it forms very magnificent sites that include headlands, bays that are secluded, cliffs and surfing sites. Driving along this route gives one a memorable experience due to the numerous sceneries that are very exciting to view.

Other sites that attract tourists to Monterey include numerous wineries, the Salinas Valley and museums as well.  However, a drive to the Big Sur should be taken with all the necessary caution it deserves. Mud slides are a common occurrence especially in the wet season.
