Dubai has been popular with expats as a tax free haven for some time and it is now transforming into travel destination for weekends and summer vacations due to its shopping, futuristic architecture, desert experience and history. The tourism industry is extremely important to the Dubai governments’ strategy to ensure foreign cash flows into the emirate.

Shopping is a big draw to Dubai and is even known as the shopping capital of the Middle East. The city attracts shopping tourists from within the country as well as across Eastern Europe, Africa and India with Amex India credit card being widely used. The souk districts in Dubai are very well known and here is where a shopper has an experience shopping and practicing their haggling and bartering skills. The shopping malls are super modern and are found around the city with varied merchandise and you can try your hand at bargaining with them.

The Global Village is known as the largest open-air cultural and entertainment venue in the Middle East with global artists performing. It attracts tourism to Dubai with events drawing in talent and visitors from other destinations as a major entertainment and shopping destination throughout the Middle East, celebrating the rich and diverse cultures.

The sights in Dubai are probably second to shopping in the city. The old Dubai and history can be overshadowed with the futuristic Dubai however they do prevail in certain areas. The buildings lining the Bur Dubai side of the city give some old cultured flavour. The architecture of Madinat Jumeirah captures the old Dubai with old wind towers and a combination of old designs. The shopping kisosks are an attraction in themselves. New Dubai is very much visible along the impressive Shaikh Zayed Road which is absolutely glittering and stunning with impressive modern architecture.

The desert is a big attraction to the city and a trip out on the sandy dunes offers a unique and memorable experience. You will see isolated villages, historical ruins and get a glimpse of the traditional Emirati life.

As the Olympics looms ever closer, not everyone is looking forward to what will surely be the spectacle of the year. Will Usain Bolt break his record? Some simply don’t care it seems.

Currency exchange specialist Travelex has conducted research which has found that any Britons will look for holidays last minute to get out of the UK during the Olympics in order to avoid all the perceived hassles that will come with one of the greatest events on earth.

The research found that over one third of Brits going on holiday have booked their time off simply to get away from the Olympics, and that ten percent of them are in fact taking a longer holiday than they would have otherwise.

Over 170,000 parents are also planning on actually taking their children out of school early in order to avoid the Olympic rush. Thousands of tourists and visitors are expected to descend on London during the games, and city’s already under-strain infrastructure is expected to struggle to cope with the influx.

Says Wendy Pritchard, of Marlow, Buckinghamshire, which sits close to the M40 motorway: “We usually go on a family holiday towards the end of summer, hoping to pick up a last minute deal. But this year we want to get away as soon as possible. With the Olympics coming up I expect the roads to be gridlocked and for it to be a nightmare to get around. We’re hoping to be somewhere sunny and a little more calm come the start of the Games!”

Among the destinations in mind for these holidays certainly some of the old favourites will be on the list, for example Corfu and Gran Canaria. Gran Canaria, the largest of the Canary Islands, benefits from almost year-round sun and is ideally suited to tourists wanting to get away from London’s stress and hassle. Cheap Gran Canaria holidays can also be found online.

Rome fascinates because of its long and stellar reign over western civilization. A great way to see this historical city is via Rome holiday packages. However, you first might want to do a bit of research as there is much to learn about Rome. Here’s a few things you may not know about Rome.

Free Places to Visit

While you’ll definitely have to pay an entry fee for some palaces and museums, there’s plenty of free things to do and see on your Rome holiday packages. Stroll in the wandering narrow streets of Rome’s beautiful quarters of Trastevere and Testaccio. The Vatican Museums are free on the last Sunday of the month. The Basilicas are mostly free, as are the large city parks like Villa Borghese and Villa Pamphili.

When in Rome, Eat Like a Roman

This may surprise you, but Roman food differs from the Italian food you may be used to. A typical Roman meal comes in two courses. The primi piatti, pasta, includes dishes like amatriciana or tomato sauce and guanciale (similar to bacon) and cabonara, which is egg sauce and guanciale. The next course is the main dish, secondi, and you will find roasted lamb, coda alla vaccinara or oxtail and red meat with rocket on Roman menus.

Vatican City

Within the boundaries of Rome resides the sovereign state of Vatican City, the world’s smallest state. While intertwined, Vatican City is a distinct entity from the Holy See. Each has its own distinct passport, but since the Holy See is not a country, it only issues service and diplomatic passports.

Coins in Fountains

If you don’t want the locals to laugh at you, refrain from throwing any coins into any fountain except the Fontana di Trevi. Make your wish there with a few coins. Also refrain from refreshing your tired feet by sticking them in the fountains after a hike on Rome’s cobblestones. On your Rome holiday packages, do as the Romans do, which means no feet dabbling in the city’s famous fountains.

Ancient Roman Women

In ancient Rome, women wore lead paste on their faces to achieve a fashionable pallor. They used goat fat and beech wood ashes to dye their hair, red and blonde being the popular colors.

Vatican Museums

The largest museum complex on earth is the Vatican Museum, which houses over a thousand separate museums. While in Rome on your Roman holiday package, be sure and visit the Gallery of Tapestries and the other museums within the Vatican.

Capuchin Monks

Rome is full of bones, many of them the bones of deceased monks decorating the Capuchin Crypt, which comprises five chapels and an immense corridor. Cappuccino takes its name from the hoods these monks wore with their habits.

City of Rome

The modern city of Rome has vastly outgrown the city’s ancient walls from the third century. Sections of the walls still remain. Archeological concerns underpin modern city planning in Rome. Ancient ruins exist right beside modern apartment buildings, making this city a breathtaking sight.

First Shopping Mall

The Emperor Trajan built the first shopping mall in the world. Consisting of several levels, over 150 shops sold items ranging from spices to fabrics to food to ready-made clothes.

First Highway

Romans built the first highway, the via Appia, to connect Rome with southern Italy. When Crassus put down Spartacus’ rebellion, he lined the Appian Way for miles with crucified slaves. Today, visitors to Rome can stroll or bike the famous via Appia.

Many people still do not realise that they can search for pricing on Larnaca flights with no obligation to make a purchase. There is also no cost associated with using travel website search tools. These tools are provided only as a means to educate consumers and provide them with the prices that they offer on flights, accommodations, and more. While they hope you use their service, you are certainly not obligated to do so.

The question of where to search is often one that is asked. A reputable travel website should stand out from the rest, and should offer flights to the destination you desire to travel to. Whether it be Larnaca, or some other location, you will want to select a website that has what you need. Another consideration may be the selection of a website that offers more than just flights, but also offers other holiday planning options as well.

You can search for Larnaca flights as often as you wish. In reality, it should not take more than one search to provide you with the information you need to know. However, should you not be prepared to complete your booking, feel free to come back at a later time and search again. Note that the search results may change with time. However, a good travel website will always offer attractive pricing.

All inclusive holidays have become extremely popular in recent times. AL inclusive holidays are those where the traveller does not have to be bothered about the planning and management of any of his needs and requirements. In an all-inclusive holiday, the traveller can be relaxed and carefree about his travel arrangements. The holiday maker handles everything, right from the flight bookings and accommodation to food and drinks and entertainment. Holiday makers have combined spa therapies to all inclusive holidays and have come up with all inclusive spa breaks, specifically designed for people who wish to get away from their daily routines for a while but do not have the time or will to plan the trip themselves.

All inclusive breaks make more sense for spa trips as these people want to be relaxed and these are the one who would wish for total freedom from having to schedule flight timings, make hotel and spa bookings and other arrangements. All inclusive spa breaks allows them to just sit back and fly out to a quality spa destination and be pampered for a few days, without having to worry about a single thing.

The internet has completely changed the way we shop for just about everything and air travel is no different. The speed and convenience of the web means it is easier than ever to get access to the information you need to find the lowest price airfare for your trip. Just arm yourself with your computer or smart phone and you will be comparing fares in just minutes.

The quickest way to compare is to use a travel site that displays fares from multiple airlines. It is as simple as putting in your information and reviewing the results. The site does all the work of pulling in data from the carrier’s database and displaying results in an easy to review grid.

However, that is not all. To help secure the lowest cost, the site will also help find lower fares based on changing flight dates, using different routes or combining carriers. This is the real power of comparison sites; helping you optimizes your trip to get the lowest fare.

Another way to keep current on the lowest fares is to sign-up for email alerts on fare specials. If you are planning a trip, do your search and then sign up to receive notification if the fare goes down. This is an easy way to monitor fare fluctuations. In just a few minutes time you can easily get access to the lowest fares available with the multitude of online comparison sites on the web.

It is a bit of a confusing issue that catches many people out, the difference between the EHIC card and travel insurance. A common mistake made is to assume the EHIC card is a form of travel insurance, but it is actually completely separate and you should make sure you have both before going on holiday.

The EHIC card is there as a physical form of an agreement made between the UK’s NHS system and the European Union nations. The EHIC it entitles you to free or reduced cost state health care in the European Union. Basically you are treated like a national of the country and entitled to the same healthcare benefits that they are. Travel insurance on the other hand covers you against the cost of all emergency health care treatment.

The main differences between the EHIC card and travel insurance are that the EHIC card covers non-private medical assistance whereas travel insurance covers you for such events as travel delays, cancellations, theft, mugging, hijacking and lost luggage. Travel insurance also covers you for any private medical services including ambulance transport, GPs and specialists. Your EHIC card is also only valid within the EU, if you are travelling outside of the EU you need to have travel insurance in order to be covered for medical expenses.

It is important if you are heading to the European Union that you have both travel insurance and an EHIC card. It is also vital that you make sure your EHIC is valid, as they do have an expiry date, so it is important to check it before you travel. It is quite easy to apply for a new EHIC card and you can do it up to 6 months in advance of your old one expiring.
