Memphis, Tennessee, Where The Blues Were Born
Memphis is a city that is found in Tennessee and is strategically located such that is forms a gateway to the Mississippi Delta. The city is found towards the western border of Tennessee on a bluff which faces the Mississippi River. It also acts as a boundary gateway between two totally contrasting regions in the USA. To the southern part of the city, there is the New Orleans that is known for its ports and poverty stricken farms of Louisiana while to the south there are the rich farms that are found in the Midwestern plains.
Memphis is well known for being the place where blues originated. According to the history of the city, blues were born on the Beale Street in 1912. This has largely contributed to the current Beale District that we know of today. Visitors to this old district will come across numerous blues clubs and joints for entertainment like restaurants and halls. This makes the city very lively and exciting to visit especially on Saturday nights. Some of the most popular Blues clubs include the Rum Boogies, the Hard Rock Café, B.B Kings, Elvis Presley’s among many more others. Most of them play delta blues that are very authentic. One of the most spectacular sites in Memphis is the marching of the Peabody ducks. This peculiar tradition is normally found at the Peabody Hotel where the ducks are usually paraded twice daily at 11AM and 5PM to perform an orchestral march. Visitors who come to witness this unique site can also tour Mud Island where one will find a river museum. The working models of the B-17, which was a World War II bomber and the Memphis Belle, are some of the things found in the museum.
Historic sites in the city include Sun Studios and the Graceland. At Sun Studios, visitors can reconnect with the past by standing in the very same room where great blues icons like Howlin Wolf, Ike Turnert, and many more came to record their songs. One can even be treated to some of the great early hits. Graceland on the other hand is a famous estate that belonged to Elvis. It is found to the south of Memphis downtown on Elvis Presley Blvd, where one will also come across malls, shops stocked with some of Elvis souvenirs.
Other attractions in Memphis include museums like the National Civil Rights Museum that is found to the south of the city’s downtown. Visitors can tour the venue where the assassination of Doctor Martin Luther King took place, the Old Lorraine Motel. The Memphis Music Hall is also another good attraction especially if one is looking for some entertainment. It is located opposite the Peabody Hotel.
